Ask a Student - Why Take an RCM Exam?

The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) program is a comprehensive music education institution that provides structured learning and assessments for students of various instruments, including flute. Established in Canada and recognized internationally, the RCM offers a curriculum designed to help students build their technical skills, musical knowledge, and performance abilities progressively through a series of graded levels.

One of my eighth grade students Rachael recently completed her Level 4 Flute Exam and received "First Class Honors with Distinction" - the highest award possible. Here's what she has to say about RCM:

In your opinion, why should students consider taking an RCM exam?

I think students should take RCM exams because it enforces them to apply all their theory, musicality, and technique into their music to become a better musician.

Can you describe your preparation process in a few sentences?

For the preparation, first, I would pick out the etudes from an RCM book and start going over the required scales. Once I have learned about half the scales and etudes, I pick out repertoire from the RCM book and start learning. If you keep a good pace and practice daily for 20-30 minutes, with focus, you should be able to get everything ready in 3-4 months.

What was the most rewarding or challenging part of participating in the RCM program?

After you finish the exam, you feel very accomplished and proud of yourself from all the effort you put in.

What advice would you give to other students preparing for their next RCM exam?

For students taking the exam I would suggest trying to get your scales, etudes, and repertoire all prepared at least 2 weeks before the exam. This helps you work out little details if you want your music to be the best it can be. After you think you are ready, have a mock exam with an accompanist. It's also good idea to record yourself play so that you can hear how you sound firsthand.

Very practical advice!

After each exam, students receive constructive feedback from certified RCM examiners. RCM also offers internationally recognized certification, which can be valuable for future academic and musical opportunities (and looks great on a resume!)

For students aiming for a well-rounded musical education with measurable progress, the RCM program is an excellent option.
